About Radical Stack

A free, portrait-first Chinese-character puzzle for people learning Chinese. Reveal stroke tiles, build characters, then combine character tokens into Chinese expressions to clear the board.

How to play

  1. Tap an uncovered stroke tile to place it in the tray. Tiles underneath become available as the layers are removed.
  2. Choose a character candidate that matches the kinds and quantities of strokes in your tray. The strokes do not have to be next to each other.
  3. Read the learning card: it shows the character, pinyin, meaning, stroke demonstration where available, and examples. The speaker button uses your device's Mandarin speech support.
  4. Combine the right character tokens into one of the supported Chinese expressions. That clears those tokens. Clear the board and tray to complete the lesson.

The first lesson introduces 人人、日月、二十. Later themes include greetings, food and drink, studying, travel and animals. You can restart for free; the first lesson also keeps completed expression groups and allows free undo of character-building actions.

What is included

Ten themed lessons with 41 teaching target characters, 105 everyday example entries and 72 supported clearing expressions. The wider character-building reference contains 6,547 characters; this is a reference catalog, not 6,547 completed lessons. Learning examples do not automatically become supported clearing expressions.

The interface supports Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese and Persian. Chinese and English single-character meanings cover the catalog. The other five languages cover 81 characters each and otherwise fall back to English. Characters and expressions stay in Chinese.

Progress, collection and scores stay in this browser. There is no account or cloud save. Mandarin playback depends on the voices available on your device. This game is practice material, not an accredited course or a promise of learning results.

Free play and voluntary support

The game is free to play. Adults can optionally choose one-time support on Ko-fi. Support does not unlock game features, extra help, or a content license. Payments take place on the external platform.
